Openings at Midwest Public Risk (MPR) do not come along often. Known for employee longevity and professional excellence, MPR is offering an opportunity for a finance professional to step into a leadership role that combines strategy, staff supervision, and hands-on financial operations. MPR is a nonprofit organization that serves more than 160 entities across Missouri and Kansas through three core programs: employee benefits, workers’ compensation, and property/liability.

MPR is staffed by a small but dedicated team of 16 employees who manage an annual budget of more than $77 million. The Finance Director will play a key role in shaping the strategic direction of MPR while also managing 2 to 3 staff members and supporting daily financial functions. This role offers a rewarding balance of leadership and practical involvement, making it well suited for either an experienced controller/finance director or a professional ready to take the next step into management. With the CEO being MPR’s former Finance Director, mentorship and guidance will be readily available to ensure success.

Overview of the Role
Responsible for fiscal leadership with budget development and management, operation coordination, management/overview of annual audit process, and decision making of budgetary and financial services for Midwest Public Risk (MPR).

Duties of this Role:

  • Supervises, directs and evaluates assigned staff, addresses employee concerns and problems, directs work, counsels, disciplines and completes employee performance appraisals

  • Maintains a positive, professional working relationship with MPR staff, Board of Directors, advisory committees, Members, and business partners

  • Ensures accuracy and inclusiveness of MPR’s accounting and financial reporting system, including combined financial results for MPR’s affiliated pools

  • Assists the President/CEO with analysis of vendors and partners, capital planning and purchases, office space planning and options, contract reviews, and financial analysis of options and their impact on MPR’s financial position and operation

  • Participates in strategic planning, including short-term, intermediate, and long-term planning and decision making

  • Assists the President/CEO with executive leadership activities with MPR staff and Board of Directors

  • Coordinates information and materials to be provided to or presented at Board of Directors meetings by conferring with President/CEO, and Administrative Assistant to CEO, to develop meeting agenda items and presentations;

  • Prepare and present financial reporting information for Board meetings

  • Compiles data and manages annual budget process

  • Provides impact on revenue and expenses of operations

  • Prepares budgets within timeframes and reflects long-range planning and impact of implementing or changing programs

  • Reports regularly to the President/CEO, Finance Advisory Committee, and Board of Directors on all MPR financial processes

  • Responsible for coordinating the annual audits and reporting results to President/CEO, Finance Advisory Committee, Members and regulators

  • Responsible for ensuring filings required by regulators are filed on a timely basis

  • Responsible for the production of timely, reliable, and accurate financial reports

  • Ensures efficient, timely, and cost-contained claims processing

  • Coordinates decisions, communications, and implementations with President/CEO, staff, Finance Advisory Board, Board of Directors, and third-party administrators as needed

  • Monitors third-party administrator performance, providing oversight and guidance, coordinates contract files, resolves problems and serves as liaison with President/CEO, staff, Finance Advisory Committee, and Board of Directors.

  • Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances

  • Supervise the finance team, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Position Requirements:

1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business/public administration, insurance or closely related field
2. Master’s degree in accounting preferred
3. CPA licensure preferred
4. Seven years of experience in public sector accounting and finance

Certifications / Licenses:

1. Valid driver’s license
2. Maintain minimal insurance coverage as indicated by state

1. Skilled in Microsoft office, spreadsheet, and presentation software
2. Efficient in record keeping
3. Understanding the results of risk management data and trends
4. Basic knowledge of scheduling, planning and conducting presentations
5. Understanding government operations and procedures
